I love spending time in the Mitte Cultural District because it is an extension of what my
grandparents left behind and, most importantly, for Brownsville. The place that is most
memorable for me is the Gladys Porter Zoo.
One of the nation’s top-rated zoos, it is located on 31-acres in the town’s center. Some new
features include the Russell Aquatic and Ecology Center with its Stingray touch tank and a
Giraffe feeding station. The zoo is the perfect weekend afternoon to learn about animals
while enjoying time with the ones you love.
As you walk in, you’re greeted by a variety of amazing animals. You quickly forget about any
worries you may have had and feel like a kid again. Everyone who works at the zoo is kind
and very knowledgeable about the animals. It’s fun for the whole family. I took my nephews
on a guided tour where we learned about every animal, fed giraffes and goats, and even
pet stingrays. Like good movies, the zoo helps you escape the world’s realities. You’re just
in the moment and can appreciate everything around you. It never gets old because the
animals are so entertaining and relaxing to watch.
The Mitte Cultural District also boasts Dean Porter Park, 25 gorgeous acres with public
picnic cabanas for families to enjoy. Sam’s Memorial Pool has a splash pad for kids. The
Children’s Museum is one of a kind learning experience for youngsters. And, the Costumes
of the Americas showcase the native dress of almost every culture in the Western
Hemisphere.
